Cowley Manor’s Timeless Journey
Cowley Manor, a living testament to the past 300 years, stands as an enchanting narrative, its pages turned anew in 2023. Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, this Grade II listed property boasts 31 bedrooms, a spa, restaurant, cocktail lounge, library, mudroom, and cozy living spaces. Join us on a whimsical journey through history and modernity, as we explore the tales woven into the fabric of Cowley Manor.
The Kings of England
As we open the first chapter of Cowley Manor’s story, we step back to 1695 when the first bricks were laid. However, the land predates even this, belonging to one of the last Anglo-Saxon Kings, Edward the Confessor. In a historical exchange, this very land was swapped for the grounds upon which Westminster Abbey now stands. The manor, with its roots intertwined with royalty, sets the stage for a captivating narrative.
A Fortune Lost
Fast forward to the 16th century when Cowley Manor found itself in the hands of the Brett family after being owned by Pershore Abbey. However, a twist in the tale saw the family lose their fortune, leading to the loss of the manor. Despite its storied past, the present structure, while exuding timeless charm, was built just over a century ago. Cowley’s resilience is evident, weathering the storms of time, its mention even in the Domesday Book speaks volumes of its longevity.
The Epitome of Luxury
In modern times, Cowley Manor stands as a beacon of innovation and luxury. Crafted by skilled artisans using traditional and local materials, it became the first private house in England to embrace concrete in its construction. With grand rooms and a modern spa complex that includes Roman, Greek, and Turkish steam rooms, Cowley continues to inspire awe.
Inspiring Famous Tales
Enter the whimsical realm of Lewis Carroll’s imagination in Chapter 4. Carroll’s regular visits to Cowley served as inspiration for the iconic “Alice in Wonderland.” Today, the manor remains a sanctuary of tranquility, adorned with unique sculptures and an eclectic collection of trees, forever resonating with creativity.
A Countryside Escape
With 55 acres of rolling hills, Cowley Manor serves as an idyllic escape for any celebration, be it milestone birthdays, corporate events, or unforgettable weddings. Its 31 bedrooms, a restaurant, cocktail bar, and spa provide a retreat of serenity, while two rooms in the main house offer intimate settings for corporate meetings or private dining.
